Chapter 22

David

Elizabeth loved him and David didn’t want to waste that, but at the same time, he’d made up his mind about what he had to do. He just needed to make sure Elizabeth understood.

“I can’t even tell you how much I love hearing that.” He swallowed, interlacing his fingers as his hands hung between his knees. “The thing is, I need to see this through. I’m not sure if there’s a chance that something is there, but I do need to push forward. Not just to prove to you that I don’t love her, but to prove to myself, to the girls, and to Jennifer.”

While saying that hurt everything inside David to say, he had to keep the complete truth to himself. He couldn’t have Jennifer accidentally finding out that he was using her false affections to find out what she was really up to.

If he told Elizabeth and Elizabeth accidentally talked to one of the boys, who knew where it would go from there. The way things stood, it might be the only chance David had to find out and protect the town of Mistletoe and his family from whatever Jennifer had up her sleeve this time.

Elizabeth’s features twisted with remorse. She nodded tightly, patting under her eyes with still-gloved fingertips. “Yes, of course, you’re right. I… You’re right.” She dropped her hands to her lap and lifted her chin, determination in the steely set to her jaw. “I’m sorry. Yes, you need to follow this through.”

David hated that he’d caused the pain in her eyes, but he couldn’t back down. There was too much at stake. If he could prove what he suspected to be true, then he would be doing more than just saving the town, he would be giving him and Elizabeth a fresh start.

Elizabeth stood from the couch, pulling her coat on as she approached the door. “I guess I’ll see you at the New Year’s party, then?”

“Well, yeah, we have some meetings on the calendar before then, too. I’ll see you soon. Don’t worry. Everything is going to work out.” He followed her to the door, reaching out and pulling her back. “I promise, Elizabeth, everything is going to work out.” He stared into her eyes, wishing he could tell her everything he had in mind and how much he truly loved her.

But he kept it in. He had to let things play out. What if he pushed her away? He couldn’t do that. He had to hold onto his plan.

She nodded and left, rushing to her SUV through the gently falling snow.

Shutting the door behind her, David turned back to face the interior of his home to find Brooke and Amanda standing on the far side of the living room.

Amanda spoke first, glancing between Brooke and her father. “Dad? Is everything okay? I heard Elizabeth pull up. Was she crying?”

“Dad, what’s going on? Are you really seeing Jennifer again? Why would you do that?” Brooke didn’t even pretend that she hadn’t been eavesdropping.
